Ranjini Eye Care-Dedicated to Advanced Retinal Surgery
Kumar (not his real name), a 25-year-old sharp shooter, working
in the central reserve police force was referred from Rajasthan with complaints
of sudden loss of vision in the right eye. He had to use his right eye to take
aim and that eye had poor vision!
After detailed evaluation, the retinal surgeon of Ranjini Eye Care diagnosed
a vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding into the eye) due to extensive retinal vasculitis
(damage to the retinal blood vessels).
The doctor started his treatment with medications and then subsequently did
a sutureless (without stitches) vitreoretinal surgery for the right eye. The
blood was removed and laser therapy was done to prevent further bleeding. This
procedure, called the microincision vitreous surgery, is the most advanced surgery
for retinal diseases and is faster and safer than conventional surgery.
Following the surgery, he improved dramatically from very hazy vision to 6/6
or normal visual acuity. Within a week after surgery, he returned back to Rajasthan
to join for duty. Now three years after surgery, he still maintains a normal
vision and is doing well (Figure 2).
The surgeons of Ranjini Eye Care first introduced this type of microsurgery
in Kerala way back in 2003. The lack of stitches and the smaller incisions (less
than 0.5 mm) helps in faster recovery. The procedure is painless and comfortable
to the patient. Ranjini Eye Care is one of the few hospitals in the country
specialised in this type of advanced retinal surgery.
Ranjini Eye Care was also the first center in Kerala to introduce the most advanced
keyhole cataract surgical procedurethe no injection, no stitch and no
patch cataract surgery.
