Mumbai’s PD Hinduja Hospital Unveils State-of-the-Art OTs

It will reduce chances of infection during surgery to the minimum, resulting in highest level of patient safety and comfort

PD Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre has recently inaugurated the new state-of-the-art digitalised OT complex with eight new OTs on its third floor. These have been designed, keeping in mind the surgeon, anaesthesist, nurses and other OT personnel working requirements through ergonomical design, proper ventilation, advance surgical tools and error free supply systems. Said Medical Director Dr Gustav Daver, "It will provide the cleanest possible operation theatre environment, reducing the chances of infection during surgery to the minimum, resulting in highest level of patient safety and comfort."

Asked about what happened to the old OTs, Joy Chakraborty, Deputy-Director, Administration, said, "We are in a process of restructuring some of the facilities in the Hospital and this existing OT area on fourth floor will be utilised for the same purpose."

The OT complex include Guided Air Flow Ventilation System (GAF), by Jhonson Medical International, a patent technology for keeping surgical site free of contaminants. It has Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems (HVAC) designed with each OT having its individual Air Handling Unit (AHU), with independent temperature and humidity controls.

"It is the first hospital in India to install Digital Direct Control (DDC) for management of pressurisation of the complex, cleanliness of the various filtration process, based on rooms and zoning. This will greatly enhance the management of the air quality within the complex," said Dr Daver.

The microbiology department will continue to maintain the air quality by conducting the routine fungus and bacteria count of the complex. The new OTs use Light Emitting Diodes (LED) which provide shadowless operating light, excellent visualisation, minimum heat generation and proper dissipation with high light intensity. It uses integrated camera with LED lamps to capture crystal clear live images. It uses centralised medical gas supply, with automatic alarm indication for each OT to ensure patient safety during surgery.

Additionally, addressable control system has been provided in the OTs to prevent fire hazards. It uses multi-purpose ceiling suspended pendant system for maximum gas terminal units and electrical sockets without having the hoses and wires hanging from the walls hindering workspace.

It also has provision for web telecasting of procedures and PACS. The OTs have permanently antistatic homogeneous vinyl flooring from Sweden. It has special walls: HPL boards are used to cover all walls of the OT rooms which are applied with the anti fungal sealing material. Each OT has independent surgeon panel for better monitoring and controls.
