Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre Conducts Dual Pacemaker Surgery

Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre has conducted dual pacemaker surgery. Reportedly it is the first such surgery in India and the eighth in the world.

The patient, Mohini Kapur, 74, is apparently the first Indian to undergo implantation of dual pacemakers in the country. "She was suffering from Parkinson's disease and it was a challenge for the team to consider deep brain stimulation surgery and she already had a cardiac pacemaker," informed Dr Paresh Doshi, HOD, Department of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. The surgery involves implantation of electrodes in the brain, which are then connected to the pacemaker of the Implantable Pulse Generator (IPG) to deliver a current. Disturbances of cardiac rhythm are similarly treated by implanting electrodes in the heart and connected to the pacemaker. Said Dr Doshi, "The patient underwent exhaustive pre-operative evaluation by the cardiology team, to assess her cardiac pacemaker and various pacemaker parameters. We took all precautions to minimise the interference of the brain pacemaker with the cardiac pacemaker. We monitored her heart rhythm and pacemaker function continuously. Post-operatively, the pacemakers were programmed in her own room." He added, "She has made a remarkable recovery from this surgery. All her Parkinson disease symptoms have been resolved."
