Relevant Topic

This is with reference to the edit opinion written by Viveka Roychowdhury in the month of July. Thank you very much for writing the editorial on Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act 2007. It is imperative that all healthcare delivery agencies - all hospitals, laboratories, clinics be graded by an independent authority to be able to guarantee outcomes. While it sounds difficult to implement this regulation, it is better late than never.

Nice Editorial

It was nice to read the editorial titled 'Balancing Bark with Bite' written by Viveka Roychowdhury in August 2008 issue. After working in this field for last 11 years and that too at the grass-root level, I sincerely feel that the problem or the obstacle is not at the society level, that is, getting the consent. The great obstacle is at the institution and at the professional level. Identification of brain dead at ICU is a great task in private as well as in public hospitals. If Government addresses to this issue, it will solve the problem to a great extent.

Secondly, appointing dedicated counsellors is another issue which requires attention and thirdly public education should be pursued aggressively. Having 'presumed consent' may open a can of worms in our country where everything is politicised. In fact I am worried that we will have so many opinions and debates on the subject that the real issue of transplanting from brain dead will get buried somewhere.
