Sankara Nethralaya Introduces Stellaris-Micro Incision Cataract Surgery

In its endeavor to equip itself with the latest in the field of ophthalmology, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, has introduced Stellaris-Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (S-MICS) reportedly for the first time in Karnataka.

Highlighting the benefits of the procedure, Dr Rajashekar, Founder and Medical Director, Sankara Nethralaya said, "It was an extremely overwhelming experience to perform a S-MICS on a 95-year-old patient. The successful treatment of even a 95-year-old patient with this revolutionary technology reinforces the fact that the process of this cataract surgery is extremely safe, painless, speedy and completely accurate." "This breakthrough innovation by Bausch & Lomb has transported the cataract arena in India to an entirely new platform and with the launch of the revolutionary S-MICS platform in our hospital, we hope to provide the patients with unmatched visual enhancement treatments in the world which offers faster recovery and better vision," added Dr Rajashekhar.

The S-MICS Platform is the smallest incision surgery ever that has enabled the reduction of the incision size from 3.2-3.4mm to 1.6-1.8mm, thereby significantly reducing surgical time. Moreover, the minimal incision size enables better restoration of patient's original vision and image clarity. Further, the AKREOS AO Micro Incision Lens (MIL) used during the surgery is customised to go through an incision size of 1.6-1.8mm. The lens offers the patient clearer vision across varying light conditions and contrast situations. It is designed to give maximum quality of vision and reduce the rate of cataract to bare minimum.
