No Cure Without Care

The Indian healthcare industry is undergoing a rapid expansion phase and in order to survive the healthcare market competition and growth, hospitals today are training and continuously updating themselves on current issues, challenges and effective methods of hospital administration. However, most conferences and workshops conducted in the healthcare industry today focus on medical issues and hospital administration. The people expected to attend programs on healthcare management include heads of healthcare organisations and others from the managerial level. 'No Cure Without Care (NCWC), a conference series, was started with the intention of bringing to light various hospital management issues not only to staff from the middle and top management of the hospitals, but also to various other hospital personnel from the lower levels of management. Express Healthcare was the official media partner for the event.

'NCWC 08 - Facing Challenges in Today's Hospitals,' the second in its series, was conducted at Bangalore. The conference saw a participation of about 175 delegates and highlighted issues like measuring, analysing and improving patient satisfaction, communicating effectively in hospitals. Dr Umapathy Panyala, COO, Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore spoke on 'Measuring, Analysing and Improving Patient Satisfaction'. "What cannot be measured cannot be improved," he said. Dr Umapathy explained the importance of patient satisfaction today and various tools used to measure and analyse the same. Shrabani Basu, Managing Consultant and a corporate mentor spoke on 'Work Motivation in Hospitals.' She revealed secrets on a person's ability to motivate and its importance in the hospital scenario. "People make all the difference," she explained. Dr Ali Khwaja, Chairman, Banjara Academy, Bangalore spoke on 'Communicating Effectively in Hospitals.’ "The spelling of Communication is 'listen', he said. His experiences, quotes and various humorous instances in healthcare kept the audience amused.

Sandhya Rani, HR Manager, Incado International, Coimbatore brought to light a new concept in healthcare, 'Impression Management.’ "You never get a second chance to make a first impression," she said. Her presentation included various techniques and methods to handle ones impression in hospitals and its importance today. Dr Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy, Managing Director of NU Hospitals, Bangalore spoke on Indian Medical Care - are we there yet? He stressed on issues related to the Indian healthcare Industry and its Global presence. He also brought to light various domestic challenges in the healthcare scenario.

Dr Brahmesh Jain, President, Healthsprint Networks, Bangalore spoke on 'Handling Insurance and Corporate patients in Hospitals.' He explained the need for technology in today's insurance scenario and how its utilisation can help in effectively handling patients. The audience comprised of a mixture of hospital staff including hospital heads, managers, nurses, doctors, paramedics. In addition to hospitals, there were also a few members from other healthcare organisations like management colleges and IT companies.

The first NCWC was conducted in Bangalore in 2006. "We are greatly motivated at the success of this conference and plan to have this in various other cities of the country once every four months. Our next NCWC conference is most likely to happen in Chennai in the month of November," said Paniel Jayanth, Chief Consultant & Head— Operations, AMEN, a healthcare management consulting company based at Bangalore.
