countries in a span of last four years and has helped in establishing laparoscopic

The Hospital is known for its training modules which provide
laparoscopic courses imparting basic as well as advanced theoretical and practical
knowledge in minimal access surgery to the young and experienced surgeons in
a structured manner. They lay emphasis on day to day practical problems that
a laparoscopic surgeon faces. There are around 30 candidates per month applying
for these courses out of which 50 per cent belong to foreign countries especially
the Gulf countries.
In the last eight years the Hospital has successfully trained
almost 2500 surgeons and gynecologists. "There is an opportunity to learn
and do all practical laparoscopic surgeries by live exposure of laparoscopic
procedures in operation theatre. The course is designed in such a way that at
the end of this laparoscopic training course the trainees will be able to perform
surgery on their patients individually," informs Dr RK Mishra, Training
Head-Laparoscopy Hospital. The two courses offered by laparoscopy Hospital comprises
of 'Diploma in Minimal Invasive Surgery' and 'Fellowship in Minimal Invasive
Surgery'. The course duration for the diploma course is one month and the course
fee is Rs1, 25,000 whereas the fellowship course is for a duration of 15 days
and it costs Rs50, 000.
IT Intervention
The Hospital has adopted a Hospital Management Programme which covers a wide
range of hospital administration and management processes. It is an integrated
end-to-end system that provides relevant information across the Hospital to
support effective decision making for patient care, hospital administration
and critical financial accounting in a seamless flow. Data Management System
is yet another application that the Hospital has which enables to manage data
conveniently. It is a computer software designed for the purpose of managing
database on the variety of data models. The Hospital has invested approximately
Rs 5 lakh for the IT applications.
Boosting Medical Tourism
"Medical Tourism is surely getting a boost and the primary reason for this
is our specialised team of laparoscopic surgeons and instruments," shares
Dr Mishra. The costs of the surgeries are almost ten times lesser than the West.
So far the Hospital has treated 50-60 patients in the course of past six years
and these treatments are mainly include bariartic surgery, hernia surgery and
infertility surgery.
Challenges
Creating awareness among the public is one of the challenges that the Hospital
is facing. "There is a lack of awareness about this treatment among the
common masses in India as a result of this we are approached by leprosy patients
because the names 'leprosy' and 'laparoscopy' look identical," says Dr
Mishra. For this the Hospital has been arranging awareness camps which take
place at least once a month. It is a one day camp which is carried out in the
regions of Delhi. Seminars on laparoscopic treatments are conducted through
these camps. Banners, posters and advertisements in the regional newspapers
are some of the other ways the Hospital has adopted to spread awareness about
the laparoscopy. The other challenge is that India doesn't manufacture good
quality laparoscopic instruments. "The laparoscopy instruments in our Hospital
have been imported from Germany, so I feel it is high time that India should
also foray in manufacturing high quality instruments suitable for laparoscopic
treatments," opines Dr Mishra. As the Hospital has its speciality only
in the areas of laparoscopic treatments there is a wide range of instruments
which are available only here.
Investments to Expansions
The investment involved for the operational costs of the Hospital is approximately
Rs 25 crore which is raised by the shareholders who are directors from private
companies. The Hospital is soon to launch another 100 bed laparoscopy hospital
in Delhi itself. "We are planning to launch laparoscopy mobile vans which
would be equipped with the laparoscopy surgery facilities," says Dr Mishra.
This van would be functional in the rural areas of the North India. The estimated
cost for this initiative is Rs 1 crore. Initially for a period of three-four
months the van would only provide facilities for laparoscopic sterilisation
because female sterilisation is one of the major needs among the women in rural
places especially in Northern India. Financially this project is supported by
World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (WALS).
The Hospital is focused to set a standard in the stream of laparoscopy treatments
and make its mark as one of the best and biggest Hospitals for laparoscopy.
