"India will be the world capital for coronary heart diseases in the next 20 years," said Dr Samuel Mathew, Cardiologist, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai. He stressed on the importance of awareness that can be created amongst the masses from an early age and prevent the occurrence of heart problems. "It is important to have a national statistics to work on proper policies and programmes to make a healthy society. Today, it is a scary situation as we get young people in late twenties and thirties with heart problems," said Dr Mathew.

Dr Anil Bradoo, President, IMA, Mumbai addressed various ways to prevent heart diseases, concentrating mainly on diet, exercise and lifestyle change. Urban society is known to have problems and it is observed that majority of people suffer from heart diseases in metros. The main reason contributing to this problem is the stressful lifestyle. "Since we do not have the statistics on young adults, the civic bodies should prepare epidemiological data so that the country can have proper statistics to work on various policies and programmes," Dr Bradoo said.
