The Super Seven
Estimated to be worth $ one billion and growing at the rate of 15 per cent, the Indian pathology sector still continues to be one of the most unorganised but the most potent arm of the Indian healthcare industry. Today, it is undergoing a transition phase with quality knocking its doorsteps. Rita Dutta profiles seven referral pathology laboratories that are setting new standards in the industry

'We Spend More Than Rs 36,000 Cr in R&D'
Leading company, Roche Diagnostics is increasingly moving towards providing solutions for 'personalised healthcare'. Dr Bhuwnesh Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, Roche Diagnostics India, discusses with Express Healthcare about how it is using new molecular insights and molecular diagnostic tests to provide tailored medicines and manage diseases better to accomplish its goal of 'personalised healthcare' solutions. Excerpts:

Laboratory Diagnosis of Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest diseases today despite the availability of effective preventive measures and chemotherapy

Laboratory Quality Control - Hurdles and Dilemmas
When we say we manage quality, it tends to dilute the process to a mere protocol of measuring imprecision or inaccuracy in an analytical procedure

Quality of Laboratory Services in India
While one laboratory gives a high sugar level, another one down the road would give a normal value

Nano in Diagnostics
The time to look closely at Point-Of-Care devices as the drivers of healthcare is here and overlooking this, could throw everyone back into the stone age

Proficiency Testing - Accreditation of Clinical Laboratories
Laboratory proficiency testing is an essential element of the laboratory quality assurance programme

Detecting Cancer through Markers
To learn to identify and utilise tumour markers, it is essential to be familiar with the function of each individual marker or group of cancer serum markers

proBNP Testing : A Marker of Congestive Heart Failure
proBNP has been deemed as 'a biomarker for all'

External Quality Assurance in Pathology
Participation and performance in External Quality Assurance schemes is at least one definite yardstick to measure quality of any pathology department of good standing

Today, it is undergoing a transition phase with quality knocking its doorsteps. Rita Dutta profiles seven referral pathology laboratories that are setting new standards in the industry

Dr Lal PathLabs, New Delhi
Dr Lal PathLabs Private Limited (LPL) was established in 1949 by the late Dr (Major) SK Lal, a pioneer in the field of pathology. Dr Arvind Lal, the present Chairman and Managing Director took over the reins of LPL in 1977. Today, the group has 35 laboratories, 650 sample collection centres and 1,550 sample pick-up points

Super Religare Laboratories, Mumbai
Established in 1995 in Mumbai, Super Religare Laboratories (SRL), formerly known as SRL Ranbaxy, is the only diagnostic network built around four zonal clinical reference lab set-ups —one each in Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Gurgaon. The company has 40 labs, 850 collection centres across India, out of which 10 labs are located in the Delhi-NCR. SRL has also spread its wings globally as it has 30 collection centres in SAARC, Gulf, Europe, the UK and North America

Piramal Diagnostics, Mumbai
From one lab in Mumbai in 1963, Dr Phadke's Lab (founded by late Dr AM Phadke and later managed by his son Dr Avinash Phadke) by the year 2000 had a turnover of Rs 2 crore. To scale up operations, Dr Phadke formed a JV with Piramal Healthcare (then called Nicholas Piramal) called Wellspring-Dr Phadke's Lab. When the JV ended in 2006, to pump in more working capital, Dr Phadke decided to sell his remaining 40 per cent stake to Piramal Healthcare, the parent company. Today, Piramal Diagnostics has 100 labs in 45 cities

Metropolis Health Service, Mumbai
Metropolis Health Services (I) Limited was founded by Dr Sushil Shah in 1981. It is India's only multi-national diagnostic chain with global presence in Sri Lanka, UAE, South Africa, and Seychelles. Metropolis provides over 3,600 specialised tests under the single roof

Thyrocare Laboratories, Navi Mumbai
Thyrocare Technologies Limited has a network of more than 10,000 service centres across the country. Thyrocare's network is vast enough to process in a day 50,000 investigations as on date and it has a capacity to process 5,00,000 investigations per day in its current facilities in Mumbai

Sneha Diagnostics, Ongole
Sneha Diagnostics founder Mohan Raju along with Dr Vijaya Kumar Raju and Venkat Mandapati, with the help of leading doctors of the region, started a world class medical diagnostics centre at Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, in one of the lowest per-capita income and highest HIV infected regions of India

Quest Diagnostics, Gurgaon
Globally, Quest has four esoteric testing labs, 2,300 patient service centres and laboratories in most major US metropolitan areas and full service laboratories in Mexico City, the UK, Puerto Rico and India. In India, it has central reference lab in Gurgaon
