The MIMS Charitable Trust of Malabar Institute of Medical
Sciences (MIMS), Calicut conducted a programme - 'Save the Little Heart' in
Dubai, recently. Honourable Consul General of India Venu Rajamony was the Chief
Guest.
The event was arranged to raise awareness and seek support
by extending free and subsidised paediatric cardiac surgery treatments to 75
poor and deserving children, who suffer from congenital heart diseases, identified
by health camps conducted by the MIMS Charitable Trust. Dr Azad Moopen, Chairman,
MIMS, highlighted the mission of the trust to mobilise resources and coordinate
activities for the medical benefit of the deserving poor children who suffer
from congenital heart diseases through this project.
Said Dr Sajan Koshy, Chief Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon, MIMS, "Congenital
heart disease affects close to 30,000 children in India every year with around
5,000 children born in Kerala. Every year at least 30 per cent of affected infants
die untreated and the effect of heart disease on them is devastating, with their
future bleak. Although cardiac defects are treatable, the treatment of the same
is equally expensive. The poor and down trodden, who cannot afford are the most
affected with their need for quality advanced treatment and monitory support,
has been recognised by MIMS."
MIMS is one of the leading healthcare institutions in India having advanced
facilities for paediatric cardiac surgeries and other advance treatments including
replacement surgeries. Said and Dr Renu Kurup, Paediatric Cardiologist, MIMS,
"MIMS cardiac centre is one among the very few hospitals in India which
provides advanced treatment facilities for child heart diseases. Though advanced
cardiac surgery has become widely available, paediatric cardiac surgery is still
not being carried out in even high-tech hospitals world wide. There are only
few of such institutions in GCC and India like MIMS which play a significant
role in this area. The huge cost for paediatric cardiac surgeries prevents parents
from taking children for such treatments. MIMS carries out surgeries at nearly
50 per cent of the charges for cases sponsored by the TRUST. In deserving cases,
the trust decides further quantum of help."
Dr Sajan Koshy presented 'Save The Little Heart' campaign and highlighted the
ongoing activities of the trust in this direction and the facilities at MIMS
Cardiac Centre. Venu Rajamany commented the notable vision of MIMS Charitable
Trust in extending helping hand for the poor and afflicted.
