Lucknow-based Sahara Hospital, the multi-disciplinary tertiary
care hospital performed the first elbow replacement surgery in the state of
Uttar Pradesh. The surgery was performed on the left elbow of a 20-year-old
computer engineer by a team led by Dr Prasoon Kant Shamshery, Orthopaedic Surgeon,
Sahara Hospital.
Due to a childhood injury, the left hand elbow of the patient was severely deformed
and extremely bent. Moreover, the elbow had got fused and completely restricted
the movement of the hand because of which, the patient was unable to eat or
dress himself and also found it difficult to use computers. The deformity was
progressively increasing with his age.
Consequently, the patient went to numerous places like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai
in search of a remedy for his ailment but ultimately found solace at Sahara
Hospital, Lucknow, where, his deformity was finally corrected and a total elbow
replacement was done.
This intricate surgery involved 'Conrad - Morrey's semi constrained elbow prosthesis',
whereby, initially, the patient's fused bones were separated while protecting
the nerves and arteries around the elbow. The medullary cavity of bones were
reamed and washed with pulsatile lavage. Thereafter, the prosthesis was inserted
into the bones using bone cement and a joint was connected. This prosthesis
allows full movement of the elbow joint. The patient was given a PCA pump to
eliminate pain because it allows him to have pain relief, all by himself. This
also allowed immediate movement of the operated elbow.
'Conrad - Morrey's semi-constrained elbow prosthesis' was invented by Mayo Clinic
of the US and is today known to be 'Gold Standards' worldwide. Soon after the
surgery, the patient was in a position to move his elbow without any difficulty.
Said Dr HP Kumar, Director (Health), Sahara Hospital, "The Orthopaedic
Centre of Sahara Hospital has highly trained and skilled specialists in the
field of trauma of musculo-skeletal system, sports medicine, adult and paediatric
reconstructive surgeries, spinal surgeries, minimally invasive procedures, arthritis,
paediatric orthopaedics, osteoporosis and bone related diseases."
Said Dr Prasoon Kant Shamshery, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sahara
Hospital, "This latest advancement in surgery is very beneficial to rheumatoid
arthritis patients who very commonly have destroyed joints. The patient, who
cannot move his joints, be it elbow, fingers, shoulders, ankle etc, after this
surgery, can immediately resume his life as a normal person. Moreover these
types of prosthesis implants are safe, very economical and offers effective
cure for such deformity."
