Paras Hospitals Starts Hospital in New Delhi

The hospital would mainly focus on mother and child, cosmetic and skin centre and minimally invasive procedures

Paras Spring Meadows

After establishing its footprint in Gurgaon, Paras Hospitals recently started its second facility by taking on a hospital in New Delhi on long-term lease. The 25-year-old Spring Meadows Hospital, one of the earliest nursing homes of Delhi, is now re-christened as Paras Spring Meadows (PSM).

Said Dr Dharminder Nagar, Managing Director, Paras Hospitals, "The Paras Spring Meadows deal was closed in January 2009, but was officially acquired on 1st April, 2009. At the time of agreement, the hospital was functioning with a running OPD and limited IPD services."

PSM would mainly focus on mother and child, cosmetic and skin centre and minimally invasive procedures. The hospital would also provide surgeries like joint transplants and other basic specialties like general surgery, internal medicine, psychiatry, non intervention cardiology etc. After the renovation, the hospital has a total bed strength of 25 and one labour delivery suite and two-bed emergency. The complete renovation cost was approximately Rs three crore.

Elaborating on the renovations, Dr Shankar Narang, GM Operations & Quality, Paras Hospitals, said, "The OPD in the basement was completely renovated and space was created for waiting area of the patients by adding two more chambers. The lighting arrangement was given a special emphasis as the illumination was important in the basement."

The challenges in the renovation included repositioning of the services as per the flow of the patients in the OPD/IPD and reception area. "Some of the examples were relocation of the pharmacy and emergency services to other areas for the maximum and appropriate utilisation of the services. The other challenges were creating a separate isolated area on the second floor for OTs, LDR suite and a level III neonatal ICU," added Dr Narang.

From one existing OT and a labour room, space was created to have two spacious OTs and a separate space for one bed post op ward. A new labour delivery suite was created for the comfort of patients during the process of normal delivery. A five-bed NICU was created with separate areas for gowning and feeding of the babies.

"All these renovations were carried on without disturbing the routin eactivities of the hospital. The areas for renovation were segregated by the functional areas and the work was carried out without disturbing the normal operations of the hospital. The complete process of renovating the hospital took only three months," added Dr Nagar.

It was not only infrastructure which was revamped, but the complete medical equipment required a revamping. The NICU is revamped with warmers, monitors, bubbles CPAP, ventilator etc. The OTs are equipped with newanaesthesia machines, monitors, OT tables and lights, operating sets and imaging solutions. The complete set up was put an integrated HIS except for the clinical services. Meanwhile, Paras Hospitals Gurgaon received NABL accreditation in May 2009 and NABH accreditation in July 2009. Asked about future expansion, Dr Nagar said, "We are soon looking to announce another 150-200 bed hospital in 6-12 months horizon in NCR." It is looking at implementing six sigma in the hospital operations in the near future.
