New Projects
ISIC to Help Set up Kenyan Spinal Injuries Centre
Inspired by the kind of services and medical practices being
followed at Delhi's ISIC, a citizen of Nairobia (whose wife was treated at ISIC)
has now firmed up plans to help open a Spinal Injuries Centre in Kenya along
similar lines by the name of Kenya Spinal Injuries Centre (KSIC).
As part of this project, a new Spinal Injuries hospital will
be set up in Kenya with ISIC helping with technology transfer and other medical
practice facilities. ISIC is also helping Kenya Spinal Injuries centre to conceive
the project, develop it, implement it and then run it. ISIC through regular
visits will train their staff in India and Kenya both. Moreover, ISIC is also
helping KSIC source grants in order to make this project a huge success.
Says Major HPS Ahluwalia, Chairman, ISIC, "Africa lacks
facilities for spinal injury management. By helping KSIC set up a facility for
spinal injury management, ISIC hopes to reach out not only to the spinal injury
patients in Kenya, but also to people from other neighbouring countries who
routinely come there for treatment. If this initiative is successful, it will
set the trend for many such centres to come up in different parts of Africa
and around the world."
ISIC will also help start a Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT)
or Bachelor of Rehabilitation Science (BRS) course at Nairobi. At present, Kenya
offers a diploma in physiotherapy only. ISIC will also assist in equipping the
rehabilitation center, to offer facilities for practical training and learning
for students / interns, organise orientation course of three months at ISIC
for doctors and physiotherapists and admit candidates from Kenya for Masters
in Physiotherapy (MPT) at ISIC Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences.
The number of injuries from various causes in Kenya averages
200 per day. A number of patients from other countries in the region seek care
and rehabilitation in Nairobi with a significant proportion of these patients
suffering from spinal injuries. Road traffic accidents, accidental falls and
gunshot wounds are among the major causes of these injuries.
