KIMS to Start A Cancer Centre

It is a JV between KIMS, California Oncology Group & 21st Century Oncology Centre


KIMS and KIMS Annex

The 450-bed Kerala Institute of Medical Science, Thiruvanathapuram is establishing a state-of-the-art cancer center, at a cost of Rs 30 crore.

To be named, KIMS California Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the centre would be a joint venture between KIMS, California Oncology Group and 21st Century Oncology Centre, USA. Said Dr MI Sahadullah, Chairman, KIMS, "KIMS California Comprehensive Cancer Centre would have 20 beds and is targeted to be operational by January 2010." The centre is coming up at an adjacent building called KIMS Annex, where two entire floors would be dedicated to oncology. The floor space area of the KIMS California Comprehensive Cancer Centre would be 21,000 square feet.

The centre would launch the following: Centre for Cancer Prevention, Early Cancer Detection Centre, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Gynaec Oncology, Paediatric Oncology, Breast Centre and Cancer Education and Research. "The centre will be providing treatment with the state-of-the-art radiation oncology equipment, chemotherapy and immuno-therapy as per the latest developments and protocols in the US. Medical oncology will be using the latest treatment according to national and international protocols,"added Dr Sahadullah.

In radiation oncology, KIMS will have two linear accelerators with Image Guided External Irradiation, Brachytherapy, Steriotactic Radiosurgery and Hypertherma. The breast centre will provide screening for early diagnosis using mammogram and ultrasound and will conduct programme for both medical personnel as well as public awareness. The gynaecological oncology will focus on pap smears for prevention and early diagnosis of cervical cancer as well as combined modality approach for the treatment of cancer cervix, uterus and ovary.

"These types of equipment are yet to be installed in any of the centers in Kerala. In addition, there will be constant exchange and training programme of technology and medical personnel between KIMS California Comprehensive Cancer Centre and major Cancer Centers in USA," he added.

The centre would initially start with two medical oncologists and two onco surgeons. In the second phase, the centre is planning to install the cutting edge technology-Cyber Knife. Annually, 35,000 new cancer cases are reported in the state of Kerala.
