Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore, recently removed an aneurysm
measuring 30-35 from a 24-year old man. This neurosurgical procedure was performed
by neurosurgeons Dr Anil Sangli and Dr Ramesh Ranganathan.
The patient who fell-off, while ploughing the field, was
provided first-aid in his local home town and then referred to Apollo-BGS Hospitals,
Mysore. On admission, he was in a state of semi-coma and was unable to move
his left upper and lower limbs.
According to neurosurgeon Dr Anil Sangli, "An immediate CT scan of his
brain showed a large space occyping lesion on the right side of the brain. It
revealed an associated blood clot also. It was diagnosed as a giant aneurysm
of the brain."
Aneurysm is an abnormal dilatation of the blood vessel in
the brain. It is usually between 5 - 15 mm in size. They have a propensity to
rupture and bleed and cause neurological problems. They are usually congenital
in nature and gradually increase in size. Aneurysm is usually between 5 - 15
mm in size. Any size more than 25 mm is considered to be a giant aneurysm. After
the aneurysm bleeds, the blood clot can irritate the other blood vessels and
cause various problems other than the problem created due to bleeding. This
is a very difficult situation to treat.
Said neurosurgeon Dr Ramesh Ranganatha, "This patient had a large aneurysm
measuring 30-35 mm in size. He required an angiogram for proper evaluation and
surgery. Within three hours after admission, he had a re-bleed and deteriorated.
He required a ventilator to breathe and CT scan showed an increase in the size
of bleed. He was immediately taken up for an emergency surgery. The blood clot
was removed and the aneurysm was 'clipped' with four clips."
He gradually recovered and is presently able to walk with support. His
mental faculties, memory, concentration, ability to read, write and comprehend
are all intact. He has minimal weakness on the left side and is recovering with
physiotherapy, added Dr Sangli.
According to Peter Kennedy, GM, Apollo-BGS Hospital, Mysore, "We are well
equipped with all state-of-the-art infrastructure to handle any kind of neurosurgical
problem, be it an emergency or otherwise. The ICU infrastructure, OT, ICU staff
and the doctors have expertise in handling any such situation."
