Mumbai Launches Stereotactic Radio-surgery Equipment

Priyanka Chopra and Tina Ambani during the launch

Mumbai-based Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) recently launched NOVALIS -TX, a stereotactic radio-surgery equipment. The hospital claims that it is the first-of-its-kind in India. The equipment was launched by Priyanka Chopra in presence of Tina Ambani.

Novalis TX is a revolutionary non invasive, image guided and precise surgery equipment. It takes 3D images of the tumour before and during the procedure and then high density precisely directed radiation beams are guided to the tumour while sparing the adjacent tissues. This ensures better tumour control, better survival rates and lesser side effects.

Varian Medical Systems (USA) and BrainLAB (Germany) have developed the Novalis Tx. Said Dr Anandh Balasubramaniam, Neurosurgeon, ADAH, "Even irregularly shaped lesions can get uniform radiation in a single session. Extra cranial tumours can also be treated and the radiation beams can adapt to breathing and other body movements to continuously maintain safe, complete and accurate dosage."

At a dose rate of 1,000 MU per minute, Novalis Tx is said to be the most powerful radio surgery system available offering fast treatment—in minutes. It has versatile spectrum of treatment options for cranial and extra-cranial indications like tumors of spine, lung, liver and prostate lesions, benign and malignant lesions, brain metastases, arteriovenous malformations and functional lesions among others. Acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, recurrent brain tumors and cavernous angiomas come within treatable range. Intractable seizures and Parkinson's disease can also benefit from this form of treatment.
