Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences Gets NABH

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIMS) Kochi, has been accredited with NABH. With this, it has become the first university teaching hospital to get NABH certification and the only university teaching hospital to get NABL (labs), NABH (hospitals) and NAAC (education) accreditation certificates —a holistic healthcare accreditation package. The certificate was handed over by none other than the Defence Minister AK Antony, who congratulated AIMS on this occasion and was impressed by the hospital infrastructure and the kind of social work it is doing in healthcare. On the same day, since AIMS also received NAAC, he said that Kerala should become a destination for higher education. He handed all the three certificates to the Vice-Chancellor of Amrita Vishwavidyapeetham, Venkat Rangan. By this, the university has become the youngest in the country to get NAAC accreditation.

Also present on this occasion was Giridhar Gyani, Chairman, Quality Council of India, who after congratulating the hospital, said that it is these hospitals who are building hope and trust amongst the countrymen. However, he also lamented about the fact that the labs and nursing homes in the country are still very un-regulated and practice low-standards. "Out of 1, 00,000 labs in the country, only 160 labs are accredited. This is a very shameful figure. How can anyone allow lives to be played with? Whenever we tried to get in regulation, it failed," he said. He further shared that NABH is also bringing in standards for the PHC in the country and the first PHC to be accredited is based in Gujarat. "The biggest push for NABH would happen in the near future as CGHS has directed all the hospitals in its panel to apply for NABH in the next two months and ordered to get NABH within 18 months of application. This is a big step, which will really help in improving healthcare quality standards," shared Dr Gyani.
