Surgeons Endorse Sleeve Gastrectomy

Over 20 leading metabolic surgeons from all over Asia came together to discuss the latest techniques and advances in metabolic surgery at the second Asian Consensus Meeting on Metabolic Surgery (ACMOMS), held recently in Mumbai. The specific goal of the conference was to establish a common opinion on sleeve gastrectomy as the most preferred surgical solution to obesity.

At the consensus meeting, the surgeons collated data from across Asia about one of the most advanced procedures in metabolic surgery — sleeve gastrectomy. Also discussed were standardisation of the procedure and indications for this type of surgery. A total of 1,400 surgeries (sleeve gastrectomy) were performed by the esteemed gathering in the past one year. A total of 800 surgeries had been performed in India itself. Sixty seven per cent of these surgeries were performed on females. Said Dr Mufazzal Lakdawala, metabolic surgeon and founder of ACMOMS, "Sleeve gastrecomy has shown marked improvements in weight loss (75 per cent excess weight loss by second year), type II diabetes mellitus (88 per cent resolution by second year), hypertension (93 per cent resolution by second year) and dyslipidaemia (83 per cent resolution by second year). This procedure is now the method of choice for most population groups, especially senior citizens and the recurrence of weight gain being minimal- only 2.7 per cent."

ACMOMS 2009 Consensus Summary
  • LSG is a safe and effective bariatric
procedure with reduction in weight and co-morbidities.
  • LSG is an acceptable primary bariatric
procedure in most cases without co-morbidities.
  • It is a procedure of choice for super-obese and the elderly.
  • One must avoid LSG in cases with severe
    gastroesophageal reflux disease.
