Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (ABMH), the multi-speciality
hospital based in Pune, has announced the commencement of specialised Department
of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Squint. The speciality department will treat
all types of eye problems in children and squints (crossed eyes) in both children
and adults.
"Eye diseases in children are unique and different from that of adults
in many aspects. They are much more difficult to identify and challenging to
treat. Many a times, neither the child nor the parents are aware that the child
is suffering from any eye disease. This is because, children don't understand
that they have some ailment in the eye or they fail to communicate the problem
to their parents. This leads to failure of identification and subsequent treatment
of clinical conditions. This finally results in subnormal vision in the child
for their entire life. Hence timely identification and treatment of eye problems
in children is very necessary, said Dr Kaushik Shah, Consultant Paediatric
Ophthalmologist and Squint Surgeon, ABMH. The Department of Paediatric Ophthalmology
and Squint at ABMH is well equipped with instruments like synaptophore, an instrument
used for diagnosis of various problems related with eye muscles and giving exercises
for the same. The RAF ruler is used for measuring convergence and accommodation
of the eyes and prisms for exact diagnosis and measurement of the amount of
squinting of eyes in children and adults. The department is managed by doctors
and orthopticians well trained in this specialty. A special 'Mother's Lounge'
has been created for the comfort of the parents during their stay at the hospital
with their kids. The hospital does not just treat patients but tries to provide
some comfort and facility to the family wherever possible.
The ophthalmology department of ABMH is well equipped with
state-of-the-art facilities which are helpful for exact diagnosis and proper
treatment of eye diseases in children as well. These are auto-refractometer,
a device used for measuring refraction of eyes, automated perimeter for early
diagnosis of glaucoma, a Nd-yag Laser which gives a greater depth of penetration
than other lasers, ultrasound A scan for exact measurement of artificial lens
power, ultrasound B scan and digital fundus camera for diagnosis and management
of retinal problems. There are many ailments, which, if not treated in time,
can lead to permanent impairment of vision. This specialised department aims
to help any child with visual problems to secure good vision and to decrease
preventable childhood blindness.
The department will also offer correction of all types of
squints in both children and adults. "This is an attempt to combat eye
diseases in children and adults and help them see this beautiful world and maintain
the health of the eyes," added Dr SP Singh, CEO, ABMH.
