'Ensure Good Documentation'

Hospital administrators need to ensure good documentation, said Dr Naresh Shetty, Medical Director, MS Ramaiah Hospitals, Bangaluru. He was speaking on Right to Information Act with regard to hospitals, as part of one-day workshop on 'Hospital Law and Medico Legal Issues' in Bangaluru. The workshop was organised by AMEN - Innovative Healthcare Initiatives in association with MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bangaluru. The workshop was attended by around 150 delegates from various parts of South India.

Advocate and legal consultant BR Deepak highlighted various important hospital laws and their practical applicability. He also threw light upon the latest trends in hospital and healthcare laws, where in he expressed salient features of the act, their applicability and limitations with respect to public hospitals and private hospitals respectively.

Dr Narendaranth V, Joint Medical Director of the same hospital, spoke on the laws related to patient care and safety, highlighting important laws like Pollution Control Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act, Biomedical Waste handling rules, Consumer Protection Act etc and their applicability. Dr Kiran J, Prof of Forensic Medicine, Sri Devarajurs Medical College, Kolar enlightened the forum on the role played by a doctor in a medico-legal case and court examination, cross examination, etc. He also threw light upon the various questions asked by advocates to the doctor and how to face them.

Prof Omprakash Nadimath, Professor, National Law School, Bangaluru explained two important aspects in medical law, namely medical negligence and malpractice. He brought light on various acts of doctors that amount to medical negligence and mal practice by citing a few solved cases as examples. "Hospitals and healthcare organisations in today's scenario need to continuously educate themselves and be updated in areas of healthcare management," said Paniel Jayanth, Head Operations, AMEN. The next workshop will be held in January 2010 in Chennai.
