Founder of Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital Passes Away

Dr Jaiveer Agarwal

Chennai-based Dr Jaiveer Agarwal, an acclaimed ophthalmologist and the Founder of Dr Agarwal's Group of Eye Hospitals, is no more. He was 79-years-old. As per the family claims his health condition was fine until the death of his doctor wife since 50 years, Dr Tahira Agarwal, who died in April which affected him quite badly.

Both the corneas of his eyes were removed and transplanted on two adults having trauma-induced vision loss. It was his son Dr Amar Agarwal, the current MD, who removed one cornea and transplanted one on a 20-year-old young adult. The other cornea was removed by Dr Atiya Agarwal, his daughter-in-law and implanted on a 55-year-old woman. Dr Jaiveer Agarwal was born on September 24, 1930. Noted leaders from Chennai paid homage to this pioneer leader which included Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin, Union Minister for Shipping GK Vasan, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment D Napoleon and Nationalist Congress Party leader Tindivanam Ramamurthy.

This sad news came just a few days after the opening of the latest super specialty eye hospital for retinal care in Chennai on November 3, 2009. This facility was inaugurated by MK Stalin himself. This hospital is set-up at the cost of Rs six core and established on a built up area of 16,000 square feet. The hospital would have facilities to treat retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, trauma in retina, vitreous haemorrhage, cataract complication, intraocular foreign body removal, congenital RPE disorder and endophathalmitis.
