"Energy
efficiency and resource conservation measures have
contributed to significant monetary, environmental and societal benefits"

About architecture: Says Dr Praneet Kumar, Facility
Director, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, "It is the only hospital in Delhi
and NCR applying complete fire norms. The hospital has six gateways. In case
of fire in one, the other parts do not get affected. We are also using TERI
guidelines for energy conservation and the in-house water treatment plant ensures
the usage of treated sewer water in the cisterns (used for toilet cleaning),
AHU and horticulture purpose."
USP of the project: That is a multi super-speciality
hospital from Fortis Healthcare.
Centrally air-conditioned: Yes.
Corporate or trust hospital: Corporate.
Single speciality or multi-speciality: Comprehensive
tertiary level services in all the specialties, with focus on cardiac, orthopaedics,
neurosciences, gastro-intestinal diseases and renal and genito-urinary diseases.
"The hospital will have a comprehensive rehabilitation programmes. Other
than physiotherapy, the Shalimar Bagh facility will also house a hydro-therapy
unit, probably the third one in the country," says Dr Kumar. It would also
offer Fortis La Femme.
Reason for choosing that area? Shalimar Bagh is one of the most densely populated
areas of Delhi.
Environment-friendly measures: The facility has adhered
to follow energy efficiency norms and comply with TERI GRIHA for the hospital
building. "Energy efficiency and resource conservation measures that have
been incorporated in various aspects of design, construction, and operation
of the proposed green building have contributed to significant monetary, environmental
and societal benefits," says Dr Kumar.
Sustainable design concepts are incorporated in different aspects of the building
design, starting from sustainable site planning. Simulation and analysis of
various alternatives had led to optimisation of building envelope to reduce
external solar gains. "In-depth analysis and optimisation of the lighting
system has resulted in significant savings in lighting system in the building.
Simulation of the air-conditioning system has enabled evaluation and selection
of various energy efficiency measures, resulting in overall 48.4 per cent energy
savings as compared to a conventional method. There is two per cent energy savings
potential with innovative and GRIHA compliant envelope design; 27 per cent energy
savings potential with the HVAC system; and 19.4 per cent energy savings potential
with the lighting system- which are important criteria during compliance with
the GRIHA rating system," adds Dr Kumar.
About advanced medical technology that the hospital would use: 128 Slice CT,
1.5 Tesla MRI, digital X-Ray, ultrasounds, mammography, 2D colour Doppler ECHO,
complete non invasive cardiac lab, pulmonology, neuro physiology lab, endoscopy
suites, dedicated floor for day care surgeries, 10 dialysis machines in the
beginning, 75 critical care beds, separate OT for cardiac surgeries, neuro and
joint replacement.
Use of IT: The hospital will be equipped with the
latest Hospital Information System (HIS) and will be linked to other Fortis
hospitals through a comprehensive IT backbone for sharing of knowledge and competencies
so as to provide the best possible care to patients and their families. "This
will be the first hospital in the country to have CAT6 100 Mbps transmission
and fibre optic connectivity between the towers. This will allow us patient
record movement on a real time basis," informs Dr Kumar. The hospital will
have EMR, RFID and so on.
No of clinicians and non-clinicians to be hired: 157
clinicians and 212 non clinicians (including nurses, paramedical and non medical
staff).
