MV Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai,
has recently launched Diastepa special footwear for diabetes with lower
risk of foot ulcers.
Said Dr Vijay Viswanathan, MD, MV Hospital for Diabetes and Research Centre,
"The footwear has special PU sole with extra depth for more effective pressure
distribution, extra depth sole has a special tread for better grip and traction,
specially designed insole bed and foam layer for added comfort and rigid counter
to ensure limited joint mobility." Additionally, it has specially designed
upper with leather lining for comfortable wear and adjustable Velcro fasteners
to take care fluctuations in foot volume. Apart from these features, a specially
derived angle of slant has been provided in the sole to give the 'rocker' effect
which is used to offload pressure from planter surface of the feet.
"All these features, incorporated after considerable research and after
testing on diabetics at MV Hospital for Diabetes make Diastep footwear an essential
item for people with diabetes. Constant wear of these footwear will prevent
foot ulcers and foot infection," added Dr Viswanathan.
Priced at Rs 1,350, the footwear has been designed after two years of collaborative
research efforts of Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, MV Hospital
and Novo Nordisk Education Foundation. MV Healthcare, a sister concern of MV
Hospital for Diabetes has been given the license to make and distribute Diastep.
The footwear will be initially available at the branches of MV Hospital for
Diabetes in Royapuram, Mylapore and Koramangala, Bangaluru and will be available
in other places very shortly.
Foot care for diabetes patients has been of special interest to Dr Viswanathan.
Pained by mass amputations caused by diabetes, way back he started improvising
on the footwear for diabetes. "Diabetes patients had to use leprosy patient
footwear and often they would be barred from entering public places as they
were mistaken as leprosy patients," says Dr Viswanathan. So, Dr Viswanathan
tied up with Central Leather Institute to produce cheap but customised footwear
for diabetes patients. The footwear designed has no toe grip, no buckle and
no steel so that diabetes amputation patients can wear them with ease.
