Mumbai Sets India's First PCOS Club

Gynaecworld, the Mumbai-based multiple specialty centre in gynaecology, recently opened the country's first PCOS club, facilitating a one-stop-shop for comprehensive management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). According to Dr Duru Shah, Medical Director, Gynaecworld, the club has been conceptualised with an intention to address complete set of medical hurdles that come in the way of women suffering from PCOS.

"PCOS club wants to offer that missing link in disease management with education and support; to treat women as a whole and not aspects of the disease in-part," says Dr Shah. Through the PCOS Specialty Clinic, members of the PCOS club are entitled to benefits such as gynaecological monitoring through the year, skin care, consultation, special discounts for laser therapy, weight control programme, help of a dietician, special offers at renowned gyms, counseling, special discounts for laboratory investigations, special discounts for ultrasonography tests and quarterly news updates on PCOS. Monthly seminars, support groups for PCOS, newsletters and several other useful schemes are being planned by the club members.

An estimated 1 in 10 women of childbearing age suffer from PCOS. Speaking on the characteristics of PCOS, she informed that the victims are likely to have high levels of male hormones, irregular or no menstrual cycle and may or may not have many small cysts in their ovaries. She further added that with no cure for PCOS, one needs to control it to prevent further complications. "Getting the symptoms under control at an earlier age may help to reduce this risk. Treatments are based on the symptoms each patient has, and whether she wants to conceive or needs contraception."
