Complicated Surgery Performed at Apollo BGS Hospitals
A rare and complicated surgery of ear was performed at
Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore.
The 29-year-old male patient came with the following complaints
of right ear - ringing sound in right ear, hearing his own voice very loudly
in his right ear, intolerance to loud sound, difficulty in hearing, fullness
in right ear and giddiness. Explained Dr Girish N Kulkarni, Consultant ENT Surgeon,
who conducted the surgery, "The patient had all the above problems since
the last 10 years. Because of which he was unable to work, difficulty in understanding
what others talk, was irritated by continuous ringing sound in his ear, loss
of proper sleep and depression. He had taken lot of treatment, but nothing was
useful to him," said Dr Kulkarni.
CT scan confirmed that patient was having superior semicircular
canal dehiscence of right ear. It means that there was communication between
inner ear and the cranial cavity, because of a small hole in the bone. Dr Kulkarni
performed Transmastoid, Middle Cranial Fossa Approach and Repair of Superior
Semicircular Canal Dehiscence on the right side. "The surgery was done
under general anaesthesia for over three hours. The bone behind the ear was
drilled (transmastoid), and through it, middle cranial cavity entered (middle
cranial fossa approach), dura (layer covering brain) was elevated. The area
of the hole was reached and it was closed using (thin layer of flesh) temporalis
fascia (repair)," explained Dr Kulkarni. Post-operative, the patient is
now relieved of his symptoms and is now fine and ready to lead a normal life.
