ASI Announces Slew of Initiative

Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) recently announced plans of starting a nation-wide cancer registry, with a provision to have a much needed separate registry for cervical cancer in women. Said Dr NK Pandey, President, ASI, "With the setting up of a separate registry, we plan to work with multi-lateral funding agencies to garner adequate funds for aiding diagnosis and disease prevention in women and children.

ASI also plans to join hands with other SAARC countries to encourage a healthy exchange of ideas and expertise in the complex field of surgery. "Another important initiative by ASI will be to work for disaster management at the national level and it will also form committees at the national, state and district level," added Dr Pandey. A joint initiative between ASI and the National Highways Authority is also in the pipeline to promote safe driving practices and set up trauma centres on the highways for early management of accident victims in critical situations and provide immediate first-aid in an attempt to save precious human lives.

ASI also wants to work at the grass root level through its section- Association of Rural Surgeons of India "We will work jointly with the Government for implementation of various programmes under the National Rural Health Mission scheme," added Dr Pandey. Plans are also afoot to form an NGO dedicated solely to control the spread of the HIV virus and work towards eradication of anaemia.

ASI will work in collaboration with Medical Council of India to improve the standard of surgical training in the country. Meetings and symposiums on continuing surgical education programmes in the country to enhance knowledge and upgrade skills will be organised for the members at regular intervals.
