He has 45 years of experience in teaching undergraduates and post-graduates students. He has been professor of medicine since 1973. He is also a PhD guide in many universities.

Dr Hedge is the Chairman of State Health Society's Expert Committee, Govt of Bihar, a visiting Professor of Cardiology, The Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London, Affiliate Professor of Human Health, Northern Colorado University, Visiting Professor of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla and retired Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Manipal. He has penned 35 books in English and Kannada published 289 research papers in Indian, British, American, German, and Kuwaiti medical journals. Amongst his numerous awards are Dr BC Roy National Award in the Category of eminent medical teacher and Karnataka Rajyothsava Award.

Asked about the significance of the award, he philosophises "Life is not only to enjoy for oneself. Life has to be useful, compassionate, to be ethical, and to be able to touch other's lives to let them live well too. In that respect, I feel that the best service one could do to society is to change herself/himself to be a better human being and to give a good example to society, rather than preaching day in and day out. As knowledge advances not by repeating known facts, but by refuting false dogmas, we have to demolish many of the myths in society especially in the areas of politics, economics, religious rituals and, medical care."

For National Integration
President and Chancellor, Manipal University and Chairman of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), Dr Ramdas M Pai (74) has recently been nominated as member of the National Integration Council reconstituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Council is a forum to review and deliberate all issues relating to national integration and evolve effective strategies to combat the evils of communalism, casteism, regionalism and separatism and also issues related to social harmony. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has in a letter informed Dr Pai of the NIC decision to nominate him as the member of the body, which comprises union ministers, chief ministers, political leaders and representatives of national commissions, media persons, businessmen, eminent public figures and others. A medical graduate of Karnataka University and a postgraduate in Hospital Administration from Temple University, Philadelphia, USA, Dr Pai has been instrumental in conceptualising, articulating and implementing the Global Delivery Model of Education in Manipal. In the past, he was an Executive Committee Member of the Medical Council of India and Member of the Dental council of India. He was a member of the Core Group constituted by the Government of India to report on the new initiatives on higher education.

"I am an Indian first and an Indian last," said Dr Pai on the nomination and conveyed his gratitude to the Centre for the honour

His next halt was at Saumya Hospital, Vijaywada as the CEO and then at Vinayak hi-tech Hospital, Salem in 2004 as Executive Director. "Vinayak Hospital was unable to commission its facility for many years. Within three months, I appointed staff and opened the hospital with 100 beds," he informs.
