Manipal Announces Manipal Pain Relief Centre
The centre aims to provide an alternative to patients with
any chronic pain that is recurrent, unbearable and longstanding
Manipal Hospital, Bangaluru inaugurated a state-of-the-art 'Manipal Pain Relief
Center'a first in the garden city. The centre aims to provide an alternative
to patients with any chronic pain that is recurrent, unbearable and longstanding.
Dr VS Acharya, Minister for Home Affairs, Government of Karnataka inaugurated
the clinic in the presence of cricketer Anil Kumble.
Manipal Pain Relief Centre is headed by Dr Suresh R Joshi, alumni of Manipal
group, with more than 30 years of experience in pain relief. He has worked with
specialists in the UK, the USA and the Netherlands. Speaking on the launch of
the specialised clinic, he said "Pain is a warning signal of impending
or actual tissue damage. If pain persists after three to six months, it becomes
chronic pain. It is not a warning signal any more, but a confirmation that treatment
is required."
Gracing the occasion, Anil Kumble said, "Pain is something that is a common
ailment all of us go through. And as a sportsperson, it is critical to remember
that persistent pain can ruin a good career. I'm glad that pain management is
emerging as a field of medical practice and can be a relief to ordinary people
like us." Chronic pain can be diagnosed and treated with several techniques.
As most treatments are in the OPD and are done by puncture through skin, it
saves a lot of time and energy. There are no side effects as compared to using
heavy pain killers (pharmaceutical products). Said Dr H Sudarshan Ballal, Medical
Director, Manipal Health Systems, "By inaugurating this ventre, we are
honouring our commitment to high quality service. Years go by for many patients
with pain complaints with no relief in sight. I'm happy that with this new facility
with simple treatment and monitoring we can alleviate suffering of patients
specially children and elderly whose threshold level to handle pain is low."
Pain Relief Centre is involved in taking care of severe, acute chronic and severe
pain of terminal cancer.
| About Pain
Pain signals are blocked at the sensory level,
to determine the transport pattern of pain. Once this is known, it can
be treated by
- Repeating the sensory block a few times at weekly intervals.
- Apply cold to the nerve to block the pain. This is effective in about
two weeks.
- Apply warmth (Radiofrequent Current RF).This takes about 10 to 12
weeks after which pain disappears.
Examples of acute pain are: Injury to bone
(ribs), Acute Herpes Zoster infection (any part of the body) and acute
neck and back pain and head ache (arising from the neck). In these situations,
temporary blocking of the nerves with a local anaesthetic, a few times,
takes away the pain so that the person can get back to work and sport.
Chronic pain is debilitating. Many times as there is nothing to be seen
from outside, people (even doctors) think it to be psychological! Pain
due to trigeminal neuralgia is severe pain one side of the face and can
be treated well under short general anaesthesia.
