Benefits of Early Integration of Medical Equipment Planning in Hospital Design

Today's hospital construction projects involve thousands of medical devices, and proper equipment planning is vital to the success of the design. Early planning of medical equipment allows the architect and engineers to better plan the space. The process ensures early budget and planning decisions start in the programming and schematic design phase.

Medical Equipment Planning allows the design team to find out exactly what the hospital and end users need their equipment to do in order to best treat patients. This also promotes early buy-in from the end users. Room-by-room equipment requirement lists allow the hospital to get preferred products and early pricing benefits. In addition, the impact of the equipment on the architectural design can be identified and addressed.

Healthcare clients are looking for technology that is not only "state-of-the-art," but also efficient, cost effective and able to improve the quality of patient care.

Nearly 25-30 percent of the overall project cost is attributed to equipment. That cost makes it critical that a comprehensive process that is formal and objective be implemented to help manage and control the equipment planning.

Medical equipment has a close interaction with building engineering systems. As medical equipment and communications technologies converge, planning and selection of medical equipment can affect a facility's infrastructure, costs, and flexibility to support technology advancements. Working with owners, architects and contractors to incorporate equipment system requirements early into design can help preventing costly change orders and project delays.
