Total Knee Replacement Brings New Hope of life to 94-four year Old Lady

Ninety-four year old Lakshmiamma's life was put on hold as she was suffering from severe pain in both knees. Due to this unbearable pain, she was unable to stand or even walk a few steps. Old age made the situation only worse for her. Although she had undergone various treatments like analgesic and physiotherapy, she was never able to walk after that. Pain radiated from her knees to the leg into the foot. She felt that she would never be able to walk in her life.

Having gone through this pain for over five years, Lakshmiamma approached Dr Lakshmi Kanth, Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in spine and knee replacement at Apollo Hospitals, Bangaluru.

In a rare surgery conducted by a team of super-specialists headed by Dr Lakshmikanth, Lakshmiamma's both knees were replaced at one go, in a single day, which is rare considering her age and the medical complications it can lead to. The patient was on her feet and back to normal within few days.

"Such procedures are particularly tough when the patient is old, like in this case, as they have several other complications attached. Meticulous planning, proper judgement and undergoing surgery in a setup with expert anaesthetists and well equipped operation theatre are some of the factors necessary to undergo a surgery. Total knee replacement is a permanent solution provided it is done by skilled and experienced consultants with the latest technology. The elderly become pain free and the quality of life improves,” said Dr Lakshmikanth.

"It was her confidence and focus to get rid of the pain that helped her come through the surgery easily. The patient recovered well during the post surgical period,” added Dr Lakshmikanth.
