The 120-bed multi speciality Parkar Hospital at Ratnagiri
in Maharashtra claims to be have installed the first permanent pacemaker in
Konkan region. The 78-year-old male patient, Madhukar Vishwanath Katre, was
referred from another hospital in Ratnagiri in an unconscious state, with a
problem of irregular heart beat associated with renal failure.
Immediately after admission, a small surgery was performed
by intensivist Dr Rajdeep Chaudhary under the guidance of Dr AD Parkar, the
founder of the hospital. The patient was put on temporary pacemaker and his
heart beat was regularised. With comprehensive treatment in ICU, the patient
regained his consciousness after three days and his kidney function became normal.
Said Dr Sandeep Kare, Dy Hospital Administrator, Parkar Hospital,
"After this miraculous recovery, patient was requiring replacement of this
temporary pacemaker with permanent one and was not at all in a state to be shifted
to higher setup in nearest metro cities. Hence, Dr Chandrakant Chauhan
& Dr Rajesh Badani, renowned cardiologists from Pune were given a call to
perform 'Konkan region's first ever' permanent pacemaker implantation in Parkar
Hospital. Dr Parkar and Dr Rajdeep Chaudhari assisted them in this successful
surgery. Post-surgery, the patient was moving comfortably in the hospital and
was discharged after eight days.
Prior to this case, the hospital used to send the patients
to higher centres to nearby metro cities like Kolhapur, Pune and Mumbai. "Henceforth,
we are planning to manage such cases in our own set up with the help of above
mentioned cariodlogist," said Dr Kare.
