Ushering in an Era of Innovation
When all think alike, then no one is thinking.
- Walter Lippman
Innovation is the wheel of change. It gives us a hope that something new and
hopefully better will emerge from the existing scenario.
Healthcare is one industry that has witnessed many innovations over the years,
be it medications, diagnostics methods and equipment or therapy and procedures;
innovations do not cease to alter healthcare as we know and practice everyday.
When it comes to healthcare innovations from India we do not have too many examples
to draw inferences from, yet neither do we draw a blank. The last few years
have produced quite a few innovations in the Indian healthcare industry. They
have aimed at enhancing life expectancy, quality of life, diagnostic and treatment
options, as well as the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the healthcare
system in our country.
Therefore, on the ocassion of our 12th anniversary, which also marks the beginning
of another new year, we decided to make innovation our central theme for the
first issue of 2012. We believe that innovations need to satisfy three basic
characteristics: novelty, an application component and an intended benefit.
Thus, innovations in healthcare could be new services, new ways of working and/or
new technologies. Also, keeping the goals of healthcare delivery in mind the
most important benefits are either improved health or reduced suffering due
to illness.
Thus, taking these factors into consideration, we have compiled a list of our
favourite innovations that we think have benefitted the Indian subcontinent
the most. Many of them have originated as a result of our famed penchant for
'Jugaad'. The Lifeline Express is an example in case.
We hope you enjoy reading about them and pray that we might have many more innovations
to talk about in the coming years, advancements which would help India become
a global leader in healthcare delivery. Yet another hope is that we will soon
see an innovation in healthcare infrastructure which would be instrumental in
banishing heart-rending tragedies like the fire incident at AMRI forever from
the modern world.
While we are on the topic of innovations and advancements in healthcare, don't
forget to browse through the momentous happenings of the healthcare industry
in the year that was....2011! Let us ring in the new year on a hopeful note
and believe that 2012 would be a great one for the Indian Healthcare sector.
Wishing all of you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!
Best Regards,
Team Express Healthcare!
