Vydehi Institute of Oncology sees itself, in times to come,
as a major player amongst the cancer centres of the country

Centre, Whitefield while detailing on the state-of-the-art radiation therapy
machine which is fully operational at Vydehi Institute of Oncology. The laser
guarded Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and respiratory gating along with
IMRT- the intensity modulated radiation therapy, one of its own kinds in Asia
was commissioned recently at Vydehi Institute of Oncology. Vydehi Institute
of Oncology is a 300-bed oncology institute situated amongst a sprawling 1,000-bed
medical college campus of Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research
Centre at Whitefield, Bangalore. The dedicated centre is housing all the important
specialties of oncology namely radiation, surgical, medical and palliative oncology.
Radiation Oncology
This highly specialised department provides services to the treatment of brain,
head and neck, thoracic, abdominal, genitourinary and extremity tumours with
the following facilities:
- Laser guarded dynamic image guided radiotherapy.
- Respiratory gating system for IGRT.
- Intensity modulated radiation therapy.
- Dynamic multi leaf collimator-MLC120.
- Amorphous silicon portal imaging system.
- Computerised treatment planning system with CT/MRI
fusion.
- Dedicated 4D CT simulator with a moveable laser system.
- Associated quality assurance and dosimetric devices.
Surgical Oncology
The department of surgical oncology has facilities to perform
all major resections. The OT complex has 10 stainless steel walled theaters
with laminar air flow and complete monitoring systems. Backed up by a dedicated
ICU and other support systems this department offers following range of surgeries:
- Thoracic oncological surgeries in dedicated thoracic
theatre environs
- Breast cancer surgeries including conservative breast
surgery, sentinel node biopsies and mammographic needle localisations.
- All range of gastro intestinal cancer surgeries.
- Genito urinary cancer surgeries.
- Extremity sarcoma tumour surgery.
- Supportive oncology surgeries like venous access,
chemoport placement, tracheostomies and biopsies.
- All range of fibre optic and rigid endoscopies
Paediatric & Adult Medical Oncology
The department provides services for solid and haematological malignancies in
both adult and paediatric cases with full-fledged chemotherapy wards and rooms
as well as isolation wards for the management of neutropenic patients. The department
also proposes to have a bone marrow/ stem cell trans-plant unit in near future.
The paediatric medical oncology specialty will focus on multi disciplinary management
of all pediatric malignancies with special emphasis on rehabilitation
Palliative and Terminal Care
The department aims to concentrate on the quality of life issues. Manned by
a dedicated palliative care specialist, the services which will be offered include
the comprehensive management of pain, management of tumor and treatment induced
vomiting, nutritional care and care of other debilitating ailments which occur
during the course of cancer. The presence of a hospice centre in the nearby
locality will help in the terminal care of advanced cancer patients.
The Goal
The ultimate goal of the oncology institute in the words of The Director is,
"To be a specialised cancer centre with means and motives to bring the
advanced cancer treatment facilities within the reach of common man". With
treatment tariffs kept at bare essential levels to achieve this goal, Vydehi
Institute of Oncology sees itself, in times to come, as a major player amongst
the cancer centres of the country.
