BGS Global launches laryngectomy club

BGS Global Hospitals launched “Global India Lary Club”, a support group for throat cancer patients who have lost their voice box after surgery on the occasion of World Voice Day.

A corporate responsibility initiative of BGS Global Hospitals, this has been formed in association with International Association of Laryngectomees and Voice of Tobacco Victims (VoTV). It aims to assist the members in their efforts towards the total rehabilitation of the laryngectomee patients, help them regain confidence, empower them to carry forward the social responsibility to create awareness about ill effects of tobacco. It will provide a forum for patients to interact with the Doctors, speech therapists, psychologists and each other and learn the best way to cope with their speech related problems.

The Global India Lary Club was inaugurated by Sri AM Prasad ADGP (Crime). He said, “A large number of these patients developed throat cancer owing to the use of tobacco. The Karnataka Police Department has taken serious steps to curb smoking in public places. A number of children fall prey to this habit. The police have taken steps to clear shops within 100 yards of schools that sell these products. We are committed to creating a tobacco free Karnataka.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr K Ravindranath, Chairman and Managing Director, Global Hospitals Group said that this initiative is indeed a way to give voice for the voiceless and comes as a boon for those patients who suffer voice box cancers. “It is our vision to spread the benefits of the forum to victims of laryngectomy residing in small towns and villages across the State,” he added.

Mohan Raj, a Retd Wing Commander and receiver of president’s gallantry award has taken a lead in addressing throat cancers patients in various forums instilling hope in them.

Presentation and interaction included topics such as new techniques and innovations in the field, latest products including swimming aids and on how to improve the voice in the long term. The International Association of Laryngectomees will provide online support interface as required.
