Indian Spinal Injuries Centre introduces Hand and Wrist Surgery Unit

In order to treat complex disorders of the hand and wrist, the Department of Orthopaedics at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre has recently set up a Hand and Wrist Surgery Unit. This department reportedly is being run by a team of highly skilled surgeons who work closely with the Rehabilitation Department. Hand and wrist surgery is a very specialised field of orthopaedics that requires advanced training. Patients who complain of Arthritis related pain and deformity- osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, psoriasis and those with recent or longstanding pain in the hand or wrist-owing to complex fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries, avascular necrosis of carpal bones can benefit immensely by undergoing a hand and wrist surgery. Other patients with deformities, stiffness, contractures related to arthritis, injury, congenital deformities, spinal cord injury- tetraplegia, nerve injury in upper limb, Dupuytren’s contracture will also immensely benefit from this kind of surgery.

“Although hands are important for daily activities and professional needs, recognition and management of hand and wrist related problems is somewhat neglected. Apart from injury related symptoms, patients may present symptoms like pain, swelling, lumps, stiffness, contractures, loss of sensation, weakness, and deformities. But none take it seriously enough,” says Dr Rashmi Chopra, Associate Consultant, Orthopaedics, Specialist Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre.

Indian Spinal Injuries Centre offers superior care in various orthopaedic and spinal conditions and also offers specialised management of various hand and wrist disorders. Besides above mentioned surgeries, the department also specialises in joint replacements- wrist and other small joint replacements, wrist arthrscopy- wrist pain, instability, deformity correction- e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, Psoriasis, Dupuytren’s contracture, tendon transfers, treatment of hand and wrist in Tetraplegia, wrist/hand ligament reconstruction, arthrodesis (fusion)- wrist and small joints, nerve disorders- compression neuropathies e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome, bone and soft tissue tumours.

“Our team of highly skilled surgeons along with the rehabilitation department is dedicated to provide world class service to patients suffering from hand and wrist problems,” further adds Dr Chopra.
