Noted surgeon and dermatologist Dr Sanjeev Mulekar has opened the first and only specialty clinic for Vitiligo in the country. Dr Mulekar has started this facility at Unit 142, Laxmi Plaza, Laxmi Industrial Estate, Andheri West, Mumbai. The clinic offers advice to patients, conducts group meetings to give them psychological support and performs Melanocyte Transplantation surgery to select patients.
Vitiligo means leukoderma, a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. The extent and rate of color loss from vitiligo is unpredictable. It can affect the skin on any part of your body. It may also affect hair, the inside of the mouth and even the eyes. Normally, the color of hair, skin and eyes is determined by melanin. Vitiligo occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning. Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, but it may be more noticeable in people with darker skin.
The primary services rendered at the clinic include in-depth consultation, counseling and group meetings. Home units of phototherapy, camouflage or covering make-up along with Melanocyte Transplantation are the latest surgical treatment.
Dr Mulekar has established a Vitiligo Treatment Clinic in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and has trained dermatologists in the US, Canada, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia. He has also established a Vitiligo Surgical section at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. On the subjects of research and training, Dr Mulekar has published over 25 papers in reputed journals and is also a reviewer for these publications.
