In his address to the Parliament, the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee made special mention on the need for a holistic healthcare system that is universally accessible, affordable and effective. To achieve this objective, he said that his government will formulate a New Health Policy and roll out a National Health Assurance Mission. It will promote Yoga and AYUSH. To address the shortfall of healthcare professionals, health education and training will be transformed. AIIMS-like institutes will be established in every state.
Acknowledging the link between health and hygiene issues, he announced that a ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ will be launched across the nation for ensuring hygiene, waste management and sanitation across the nation as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, to be celebrated in the year 2019.
