| Release of Symbiosis Health Times at the Valedictory Ceremony of XIV National seminar on ‘Hospital/ Healthcare Management, Medico- Legal Systems & Clinical Research’ at Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences |
Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences (SIHS), Symbiosis International University (SIU) organised its XIV National seminar on “Hospital/Healthcare Management, Medico-Legal Systems & Clinical Research” over May 4-5. Organised every year, this seminar aims to disseminate knowledge on current trends and practices in health care management and reaches out to different health care sectors and health care professionals working across the country.
Dr Rajiv Yeravdekar, Director, SIHS and Dean, FOHS in his inaugural address stressed the need for such seminars where eminent personalities from Government and private sectors share their expertise with the senior and novice health care professionals. This year’s annual seminar also included a track on clinical research, reflecting industry trends. His address was followed by a felicitation of the dignitaries and the traditional lamp lighting ceremony.
The Chief Guest for the seminar and the Vice Chancellor, SIU, Dr Bhushan Patwardhan, stressed on the importance of health for each individual and termed it as an active process in which each individual must participate as health goes much beyond medicine. He emphasised on clinical research with focus on the need for excellent trained resources.
A pre-conference symposium on “Successful Healthcare Models” saw presentations from eminent personalities in the fields of healthcare and IT sectors like Dr Purshottam Lal, Chairman, Metro Group of Hospitals; Dr GSK Velu, Managing Director, Trivitron Group; Dr R S Paranjape, Director, NARI; Dr Abhay Shukla, Senior Programme coordinator, SATHI-CEHAT and Dr Vishal Tahiliani, Head Healthcare Practice, Zensar Technologies.
Post lunch sessions were on hot button subjects like healthcare marketing and brand building by Dr Narottam Puri, Advisor Medical, Fortis Healthcare, medical writing in clinical research by Dr Vaman Khadilkar, Jehangir Hospital and public private partnerships (PPPs) by Dr B S Nagaonkar, Assistant Director, Directorate of Health Services. Likewise the post tea session continued with Dr Vrajlal Sapovadia, Ex Director NIA speaking on healthcare insurance and Dr Dhananjay Bakhle, Executive Vice President, Lupin on the phases of clinical research and interestingly also touching on the limitations of clinical trials.
The day ended with a networking dinner where the delegates got a chance to exchange notes and views.
The second day of the national seminar kicked off with important sessions like quality and accreditation by Dr Giridhar Gyani, Secretary General, QCI. The clinical research track covered aspects like designing of clinical trials, bio-statistics, clinical data management, research methodology and regulations in clinical research. The parallel track touched on transforming healthcare with IT by Dr Vikram Chhatwal, Director, MediAssist, and legal aspects of healthcare by Dr Gopinath Shenoy, medico legal consultant.
A session on medical aesthetics chaired by Dr Pumori Saokar, consultant dermatologist, Joshi Hospital with Dr Mohan Thomas, Medical Director, Cosmetic Surgery Institute and Dr Sangeeta Amladi, Head Medical Services, Kaya drew a packed auditorium as this was a field that clearly captured the imagination of the delegates both for the associated glamour as well as the good career prospects.
Valedictory ceremony
The National Seminar concluded with the valedictory ceremony graced by the Chief Guest Dr Nata Menabde, WHO Representative to India, as well as Guest of Honour Advocate Ram Jethmalani, Former Union Law Minister, and presided over by Dr Vidya Yeravdekar, Principal Director, SIU a well as Dr Rajiv Yeravdekar, Director SCHC, Dean SIHS. In her address at the valedictory ceremony, Dr Vidya Yeravdekar conveyed that SIU would keep up efforts to execute the dreams for health facilities for the aspirants. Symbiosis Health Times was released by Jethmalani.
Dr Menabde appreciated SIHS’s efforts in organising such an educative Seminar. She said that WHO would help bring career offers for India and added that it was up to young professionals to decide what they would do to save lives. She said that we should earn degrees to serve our people and that in fact it is our moral duty to do so. In her view, health services should be accessible, acceptable to general public and they should be satisfied with these services. She stressed about the importance of educational institutes, Primary Health Centres and Hospital Care Centre services.
On a sobering note, Jethmalani spoke on the present healthcare scenario in India and expressed the need for doctors to be very loyal as many forget their medical oath. Each physician must abide by the oath they take and come out of all the false beliefs that would endanger a patient. Everyone on the earth must understand the implications of the law. He sincerely expressed the need for a National Organ Bank which would cater to the needs of needy people.
The Valedictory function was followed by Convocation Ceremony of PGDHHM, PGDMLS, PGDCR and distribution of certificates by Dr Menabde.
