35 Liver transplant recipients, donors to join Dream Run in Mumbai Marathon

Supported by Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central the 6.6 Km run aims to bust myths about organ donation and transplants

To spread the message and benefits of organ donation and transplants, more than 35 liver transplant recipient and living donor are participating in the Tata Mumbai Marathon (previously known as Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon) this January 21.

Conducted by Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, a centre for liver transplants, all the participants will particiapte in the Dream Run category which is for 6.6 km. According to the hospital, all these participants are yet to complete one year after their operation.

Organ donation rates in India remain very low, resulting in a severe shortage of organs for transplantation. Every 10 minutes a new name is added to the waiting list and at least 15 patients die every day waiting for a organ. As per the data released by Government in August 2017, 12,000 people were on the wait list for organs in Maharashtra itself.

Commenting on this Dr Anurag Shrimal, Abdominal Organ Transplantation & HPB Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals said, “The only treatment option with patients with advanced liver disease is a timely liver transplant. It transforms the life of these patients from a dependent to a bread winner for the family. But unfortunately more than 90 per cent of our population is unaware about organ donation. A lot of myths surround this noble cause. By participating in this marathon with a group of liver transplant recipients and donors, we want the spread the right message to the masses that Liver Transplant adds life to years and Proud to be a Organ Donor – Healthy and Active. And finally Donate organs, Save life’s, Life Wins.”
