The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, in collaboration with Intuitive, a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery, successfully hosted live Demonstration of Robotic surgery cases from Centre of Excellence, Georgia Medical Center USA. The initiative enabled real-time knowledge exchange between leading global surgeons and young Indian surgical residents.
Led by Dr. Chad Cooper, renowned robotic surgeon and Co-Director of the Hernia Center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC), USA, the live remote session connected residents and surgeons from AIIMS Delhi’s Department of Surgical Disciplines with the operating theatre in the United States. Over 60 faculty members, senior and junior residents, and fellows from all six units of the department observed the session remotely, gaining first-hand exposure to complex robotic-assisted procedures and surgical decision-making.
The interactive session featured three Trans-Abdominal Hernia Repairs. Throughout the procedures, Dr. Cooper provided detailed insights into instrument handling, precise surgical movements, and the integration of robotic technology for enhanced patient outcomes.
While commenting on this unique initiative, Prof. Virinder Kumar Bansal Professor of Surgery, AIIMS Delhi said, “Initiatives like this reflect our ongoing commitment to advancing surgical education and training in India through innovation and collaboration. Partnering with global leaders like Intuitive and learning directly from international experts such as Dr. Cooper allows our residents to gain insights into cutting-edge techniques, refine their skills, and embrace new surgical approaches. Advanced robotic-assisted system like da Vinci empowers our surgeons to perform high-risk surgeries with enhanced precision and confidence, setting a new standard for patient care in India.”
This enabled real-time interaction, allowing participants to ask questions, clarify techniques, and discuss clinical decision-making during live procedures. The format underscores the growing role of digital and robotic technologies in expanding access to advanced surgical learning without the need for travel.
“We are pleased to announce our collaboration with AIIMS Delhi to establish a new benchmark in remote medical education for minimally invasive surgery. This initiative underlines the power of real-time telecollaboration to bridge geographic boundaries and connect resident surgeons in India with leading global experts through a seamless, two-way interactive learning environment.
By integrating this capability into the da Vinci surgical system, we are shrinking the globe and helping to build a future-ready generation of surgeons— one that can incorporate global best practices and is better equipped to deliver safer, more precise surgical care to patients across India,” said Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, Intuitive India.
This initiative reinforces AIIMS Delhi’s vision of democratizing access to advanced surgical training through digital innovation and global partnerships. The success of this initiative lays the foundation for future international knowledge-sharing programs, strengthening India’s leadership in robotic-assisted surgery education and excellence.
