Dr KM Cherian, Founder, Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Dr KM Cherian Heart Foundation recently released his book ‘A Compendium of National & International Publications.’ It reflects his surgical and scientific work published in various National and International journals which spans around his cardiac surgical career of close to 45 years in India. The book is a compilation of 191 international and national clinical articles and 103 national and international research articles. The book release also sought the presence of 40+ doctors, former colleagues and peers from the medical fraternity, as well.
With the aim of science being to generate new and reliable knowledge, it is therefore important to be clear and precise while writing articles. Moreover, there should be no ambiguity and vagueness because the material published will be reviewed and read by other members of the scientific community.
Commenting on the same, Dr Cherian said, “Publishing one’s work is the only way knowledge is disseminated in society. It is our duty to share our knowledge and experiences. This body of knowledge will be the foundation for further work on the same subject and therefore it has to be honest and accurate. Not all results will be positive but it’s important to document the facts faithfully because negative outcomes are results too and we can learn from them. In fact I wish to reproduce a brief extract from one of my surgical notes written in 1975 “the OT Notes of the RVOT resection” This should become a habit and like all habits it comes with regular practice.”
Further adding to this, Dr Cherian said, “Writing cements all our thoughts, experiences and findings of a particular procedure and is our legacy for posterity. It will serve to stimulate, guide and possibly motivate the subsequent generations to search for answers that we have not yet found. As noted by all, I had surrendered my permanent residency in the US and Australia to come back and work for my country. For me, motivation comes from passion, which in turn resulted in the inception of Frontier Mediville. My work has encouraged me in instituting a Basic Research Park, otherwise I would have used my time, money, and effort in building another hospital or another medical college.”
Dr Cherian has been the Honorary Surgeon to the President of India from 1990 to 1993 and has reportedly performed 48,000+ surgeries. He is the first Indian member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
