IMA-NEBS joins hands with Zynova Shalby Hospital to lead organ donation awareness drive

The event brought together healthcare professionals, students, and members of the public to raise awareness about organ donation and its role in addressing the growing need for organ transplants in India

The Indian Medical Association-North East Bombay Suburban (IMA-NEBS), in association with Zynova Shalby Hospital, organised an organ donation awareness programme aimed at educating citizens about the importance of organ donation and encouraging informed discussions around the subject.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, students, and members of the public to raise awareness about organ donation and its role in addressing the growing need for organ transplants in India. Participants took part in a range of activities, including an awareness-themed treasure hunt and a car decoration competition carrying messages promoting organ donation. The activities were designed to encourage conversations around organ donation within families and communities.

Among those present were Dr Kalpesh Shah, President, IMA-NEBS; Dr Urvi Maheshwari, Secretary, IMA-NEBS; Dr Neha Shah, Treasurer, IMA-NEBS; members of IMA-NEBS; and Mr Reny Varghese, COO, Zynova Shalby Hospital.

According to health experts, thousands of patients with end-stage organ failure require transplants each year, while the number of available donor organs remains significantly lower than the demand. Awareness and informed decision-making are considered important factors in improving organ donation rates and reducing the gap between organ availability and patient needs.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kalpesh Shah, President, IMA-NEBS, said, “Organ donation requires greater public understanding and participation. Awareness initiatives help address misconceptions and encourage individuals and families to learn more about the process. Increasing awareness is an important step towards supporting patients who are waiting for life-saving transplants.”

He added that organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs and pancreas, as well as tissues including skin and eyes, can be donated under specific medical circumstances, including cases of brain death.

Reny Varghese, COO, Zynova Shalby Hospital, said, “Many patients continue to wait for organ transplants because of limited donor availability. Community awareness programmes provide an opportunity to educate people about organ donation, address common concerns, and encourage discussions that can help individuals make informed choices.”
