India has 3445 COVID-19 cases per million population, which is one of the lowest globally but high as compared to other countries in South East Asia
Explaining this discrepancy in response to a question in Lok Sabha today, Shree Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State (Health and Family Welfare), compared India’s 3445 cases per million population to 19295 for US, 20146 for Brazil, 7283 for Russian Federation and 10929 for South Africa.
The minister’s written reply attributed India’s low case fatality to early case detection through community-based surveillance, containment measures including strict perimeter control, house-to-house case search and follow-up with monitoring of oxygen saturation, early referral to COVID treatment facilities and adequate case management.
While India scaled another peak of single day recoveries, with 87,472 COVID discharged in the last 24 hours, as per health ministry data, 1174 deaths were reported in the same period.
