Free diabetes screening was conducted for all pourakarmikas from the East zone of BBMP

Marking World Diabetes Day, Novo Nordisk Education Foundation, organised the launch of a diabetes campaign in Bengaluru at Dr Rajkumar Glass House in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) head office. Inaugurated by BN Manjunath Reddy, Mayor, Bengaluru in the presence of G Kumar Naik, Commissioner, BBMP and Melvin Dsouza, Managing Trustee, Novo Nordisk Education Foundation – reportedly more than 4000 pourakarmikas and BBMP employees participated in the awareness and screening camp highlighting the theme – Join the fight against diabetes.

The campaign is a tie up with BBMP, Bengaluru in which free screening and diabetes awareness was conducted for all pourakarmikas (sanitation workers) from the East zone of BBMP, Bengaluru on the same day. This camp was the first camp after which it was proposed that pourakarmikas from the seven other zones be screened as well.

There is an urgent need from stakeholders across including government and private parties to create a conducive environment and infrastructure for proper diagnosis and management of diabetes in India. Diabetes not just complicates everyday living; it also puts the affected person at strong risk of complications. As we continue to find ways to contain the ramifications of this health disorder, it is critical that we reach out to different segments of the society and address their concerns at the grass-root level. The BBMP pourakarmikas are serve the citizens dedicatedly round the clock and therefore following a healthy lifestyle is improbable. This means that possibility of developing diabetes is higher. We are happy to support the people who serve our city and help them lead a healthy life” said Melvin D’Souza, Managing Trustee, Novo Nordisk Education Foundation.

Diabetes has emerged as one of the most serious health problems of our time. Known as the silent killer, the hallmark of the problem has been that due to lack of awareness, a large percentage of people don’t even know they have diabetes. Awareness creation and screening for early detection through such screening camps are important to fight against diabetes said Dr KM Prasanna Kumar, CEO, Bangalore Diabetes Hospital.
