PNB Housing Finance and Wockhardt Foundation launch second phase of mobile medical units for underserved communities

The initiative provides primary healthcare access to construction workers and marginalised populations across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad

The programme aims to improve access to primary healthcare services for construction workers and low-income communities across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.

The initiative is targeted at communities located near construction sites and informal settlements, where access to affordable medical care is limited. Many families in these areas delay or forego basic treatment due to high travel expenses, long waiting times at hospitals, or the risk of losing income when taking time off work.

To address these barriers, PNB Housing Finance and Wockhardt Foundation are deploying medical vans that bring healthcare directly to these communities. Each MMU is staffed by a team comprising an MBBS doctor, a pharmacist, and a licensed driver. Services offered include general check-ups, treatment for common illnesses, management of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension, and referrals for specialist care. The vans will also conduct sessions on health education, hygiene awareness, and available government healthcare schemes.

Girish Kousgi, MD & CEO of PNB Housing Finance, stated, “Healthcare is a basic right, yet access remains a privilege for many. At PNB Housing Finance, we believe that development must be inclusive, and that means addressing real needs where they exist – on the ground, at construction sites, in underserved neighborhoods. Our Mobile Medical Unit Program in association with Wockhardt Foundation aims to reduce the financial and physical barriers that prevent thousands of underserved families from seeking primary medical care. This is not just about treatment – it’s about creating awareness and promoting long-term well-being amongst the masses.”

According to Denis Varghese, Director of Wockhardt Foundation, “This collaboration with PNB Housing Finance gives us an opportunity to bring healthcare to those who need it the most – right inside the communities. With over 93,000 lives touched in Phase 1, this next chapter will further expand our reach to over one lakh individuals—a meaningful step toward bridging the healthcare gap. By bringing healthcare to the underserved, we will continue to empower communities to take charge of their health.”

The second phase of the MMU programme builds on the foundation laid in Phase 1, during which four mobile units served thousands of individuals, with construction workers forming a significant portion of the beneficiaries. This expansion reaffirms PNB Housing Finance’s focus on community development and its role in contributing to urban healthcare infrastructure.
