Vikram Hospital stresses on annual health checks for good kidney health

Experts at Vikram hospital also gave certain tips that can be followed to keep kidney ailments at bay

To mark World Kidney Day, Vikram Hospital-Bangalore’s emphasised on healthy lifestyle, annual health checks especially for diabetics and people with high blood pressure. Keeping in mind the importance of drinking water to maintain optimum kidney health, water bottles were distributed to more than 1000 auto drivers in front of the hospital at Millers Road.

“Youngsters in India do not undergo preventive health checks at any point of time. One needs to understand that timely assessment of a disease can stop progression to an advanced stage,” said Dr Satish Kumar MM, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Vikram Hospital.

“Once diagnosed with a kidney ailment one eventually needs either a transplant or life-long dialysis since it is not currently curable. This increases the burden on the healthcare sector as we are unable to match the demand for donor kidneys due to lack of donor availability. Therefore, we constantly focus on preventive measures and encourage our patients to undergo health check-ups and relevant screening at least once a year,” said Javali Sudhir Pai, ED & CEO, Vikram Hospital. “One can lose 90 per cent of Kidney Function without any symptom. Majority of the patients diagnosed with CKDs had never undergone a renal function test earlier. This is because of lack of sensitivity and awareness,” added Dr Satish Kumar MM, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Vikram Hospital.
