CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI launches dedicated foot care clinic

The care pathway will include diabetes management, vascular assessment, wound treatment, rehabilitation, and measures to reduce the risk of recurrence

CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI has launched a dedicated Foot Care Clinic focused on the management of diabetic foot complications. According to the hospital, it is the first such specialised clinic in Eastern India. The clinic will be led by Dr Anupam Golash, Consultant – Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and will provide care for patients with diabetic foot ulcers through services including early diagnosis, wound management, limb preservation, rehabilitation, and preventive care.

Commenting on the need for specialised care, Dr Golash said, “Diabetic foot ulcers are not just wounds; they are indicators of a much larger underlying disease burden. Early detection and treatment can help prevent complications, preserve mobility, and significantly improve quality of life. Unfortunately, many patients seek treatment only after the condition has progressed to an advanced stage.”

The clinic will follow a multidisciplinary model involving diabetologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, vascular specialists, interventional radiologists, wound care experts, nursing teams, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation specialists. The care pathway will include diabetes management, vascular assessment, wound treatment, rehabilitation, and measures to reduce the risk of recurrence.

The initiative will also focus on improving awareness of diabetic foot health. Diabetes-related neuropathy can reduce sensation in the feet, making patients more susceptible to unnoticed injuries, infections, and ulcers. Delayed diagnosis and limited awareness are among the factors that contribute to disease progression and increase the risk of avoidable amputations.

According to Dr Golash, diabetic foot care requires continuous monitoring and preventive care. Patients must be educated about daily foot inspection, proper footwear, avoiding barefoot walking, and seeking timely medical attention for even minor foot injuries. The clinic will therefore place a strong emphasis on patient education and preventive care alongside clinical treatment.
