Nihilent launches AI-powered emotion detection and emotional wellness app
Powered by Emoscape, nSEPIA helps individuals understand their emotional state in real time and recommends personalised interventions to help balance their emotions
Nihilent has announced the global launch of nSEPIA, an application that uses emotion detection technology to help individuals understand their emotional state and access interventions related to emotional well-being. The application will be available on Android and iOS.
nSEPIA is built around a three-step approach: understanding an individual’s emotional state, responding to it through a relevant intervention, and reassessing the state after the intervention. The approach is intended to move beyond simply identifying or naming emotions by linking assessment with activities that may support emotional regulation.
The experience begins with a brief interaction using the device’s camera. The application analyses spatial and temporal movement patterns across the face and eye region, along with head and upper-body movement, to assess the user’s emotional state. The assessment is processed on the device. Based on the assessment, nSEPIA provides interventions across areas such as music, breathwork, yoga and meditation.
Users can reassess their emotional state after engaging with an intervention, allowing them to observe any change and reflect on their experience. This creates a cycle of awareness, intervention and reflection.
Commenting on the launch, L.C. Singh, Founder and Executive Chairman, Nihilent said, “We have spent years trying to understand how emotions influence the way we think, decide, relate and live. nSEPIA brings that understanding into everyday life. It gives an individual an opportunity to become aware of the emotion in the moment and, instead of simply living through it, take a relevant step towards balance. Technology, in this sense, is not replacing human understanding; it is helping us become more aware of ourselves. That is central to Nihilent’s larger purpose of humanising technology.”
Speaking on the initiative, Dr Vihang Vahia, Consultant Psychiatrist and Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, said, “Emotions are integral to human behaviour and well-being, yet understanding their impact has traditionally depended on what an individual can recognise, articulate or report. Bringing greater objectivity to how emotions are understood is therefore an important development. Having been associated with Nihilent’s work in this area, it is gratifying to see this thinking extended through nSEPIA, where insight into emotional state becomes the starting point for helping an individual move towards greater emotional balance.”
The application includes music, meditation, breathwork, yoga and guided reflection as part of its intervention framework. The musical experiences include Indian classical ragas, Western symphonic music and specially created compositions. Meditation, breathwork and yoga experiences draw on Indian traditions, including practices influenced by the B.K.S. Iyengar tradition, with inputs from relevant experts.
The technology underpinning nSEPIA is Emoscape, Nihilent’s Emotion AI platform. It combines artificial intelligence, computer vision and machine learning within a proprietary framework based on the Navarasa principles described in the Natyashastra. According to Nihilent, the platform has been evaluated through scientific and academic research for its ability to assess human emotions.
While Emoscape has been developed for professional and institutional applications, nSEPIA applies the underlying emotion-assessment technology to an individual-facing wellness application.
The launch comes amid growing interest in technology-enabled approaches to understanding emotional well-being, including tools that seek to combine assessment with personalised interventions and reflection.
