LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), in collaboration with Tata Centre for Design and Innovation and MIT Media Lab, inaugurated the ReDx: Engineering the Eye Workshop as part of the Design Innovation Series from LVPEI’s Innovation Centre – Srujana, which is funded through the support of CYIENT (formerly Infotech Enterprises). Reportedly, about 100 Engineering and Design students from all across India will work on prototypes for their innovations at the workshop till July 19th, broadly divided into four tracks: Imaging the eye, Programming perception, Reinventing vision and Apps & Algorithms. Faculty from LVPEI and MIT Media Lab will mentor the participants. The keynote address at the inaugural of the workshop was delivered by Professor Raghunath Mashelkar, Chairman, National Innovation Foundation – India.

The Srujana Innovation Centre at LVPEI will support the ideas that come out of the workshop and share the requisite technical as well as domain knowledge with the participants so as to disseminate the knowledge and developments at the innovation centre. The domain expertise will help in the value enhancement of the cost effective products or technologies for use at the consumer end.

Dr Gullapalli N Rao, Founder-Chair, L V Prasad Eye Institute said that setting up the Innovation Hub was an initiative towards fulfilling the mission of the Institute to create a system for nurturing innovation in ophthalmology and optometry, thereby making the allied services equitable and accessible to all those who need them. “The need of the hour for India and other developing nations is to make goods and services that are ultra-low-cost and extremely affordable; not ‘low performance, low price,’ but ‘high performance, low price,’ he said.

Dr Virender Sangwan, Director, Srujana Centre for Innovation and Centre for Regenerative Ophthalmology, L V Prasad Eye Institute said that realising the need to motivate youngsters to play a role in making healthcare affordable, LVPEI is delighted to provide a platform whenever there is an opportunity to ideate and create new products and technology. “Our mission is to make eye care inclusive and these initiatives at Srujana are pertinent for global societal challenges and needs,” he added.

The Design Innovation Series aims to share LVPEI’s interdisciplinary research, design and development cultures and inculcate an attitude of hands-on creative learning. After the in-house evaluation, if a product is considered suitable, support for creating a business model and intellectual property shall be provided to the inventors. These initiatives will help identify the benefits of each prototype and if economically viable, adopt them in to offer best in class services to the institute’s patients.

B V R Mohan Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, CYIENT said, “We are very happy to partner with LVPEI and extend support to promote eye care aligned project innovation as part of our CSR activities. It is important to encourage these bright and talented students with technical and infrastructural support in order to sustain the impetus created by the workshop.”

The ReDx workshop, after its day-long launch event on July 13, will move to Cyient’s campus at Gachibowli.
