MedGenome’s scientific affairs team presented on the evolution of genomics, its wide use in medical diagnosis and relevance for a clinician while deciding on the future treatment regimen

MedGenome recently organised a continuous medical education programme on “recent developments in medical diagnostic tests in molecular genetics” at the paediatric department, AMRI Hospitals, Kolkata. This was attended by an elite panel of doctors, particularly child neurologists and nephrologists.

MedGenome’s scientific affairs team presented on the evolution of genomics, its wide use in medical diagnosis and relevance for a clinician while deciding on the future treatment regimen. Discussions also revolved around the current technologies such as RT-PCR, Sanger sequencing, Next-generation sequencing etc. used in genetic testing most of which are available with MedGenome. Doctors strongly felt the need of including genetic testing as it plays a critical role in understanding the disease pattern.

Dr Rajiv Sinha, a prominent paediatric nephrologist said, “It is believed that in the coming decade most of the aspects of medical science will be influenced by the rapid developments we are seeing in the field of genetics. The whole genome sequencing has opened up new avenues and genetic testing for various diseases which were previously prohibitively costly is becoming more affordable.”

Dr Braja Roy and Dr Atanu Jana in the AMRI team felt the need of applying genetics in neonatology and opined on the exciting possibilities that this brings in clinical practice.
